Southport decks are the elders of our service area. The housing stock here largely predates the 2000s boom, and decks built in the 80s and 90s have finished their careers: surfaces past saving, frames with rot at the connections and footings poured shallow before anyone enforced frost depth consistently. A bigger share of Southport calls end in full rebuilds than anywhere else we work, and owners deserve that truth up front rather than after a season of patch invoices.

A rebuild here is also a chance to fix what the original never had: footings below frost depth so posts stop heaving, a bolted and flashed ledger, hardware-connected joists and railings that meet modern strength expectations. Pressure-treated rebuilds run $9,000 to $18,000 and composite $18,000 to $30,000 on the published table, sized by footage, and the result is a deck that will outlast the mortgage.

Frost heave, the southside's signature deck killer

Southport's clay-heavy ground makes frost heave the local signature failure. Footings poured shallow in the 80s lift a little every freeze-thaw cycle, and thirty years of cycles leaves posts standing proud, decks out of level and connections strained. If your deck has a corner that rides up each winter, that is heave, and no surface repair fixes a footing problem.

Southport and the near southside

Around Southport the calls come from the neighborhoods off Southport Road, the streets around Southport High School, the McFarland Road corridor, covering ZIP 46237, 46227. If your deck is near those, a crew has almost certainly been under one like it.

Southport deck questions

Is any 40 year old deck worth repairing?

Occasionally, when it was overbuilt originally and kept dry, and we will say so when we see it. More often the honest math favors rebuilding: repairs on a failing frame stack up fast against a rebuild price that resets everything for decades. We show both numbers side by side and let the arithmetic talk.

What does frost depth mean for our rebuild?

Footings in central Indiana need to sit below the depth the ground freezes, roughly 30 inches around here, so winter cannot lift them. Old decks often sit on footings half that deep, which is why they heave. New footings to proper depth are a standard part of every rebuild we quote.

Can we reuse our old concrete footings?

Only if they are deep enough and sound, which the inspection checks with a probe and, where needed, a test dig. Reusing good footings saves real money; reusing heaved ones builds a new deck on the old problem, and we decline to do it.

Southside Deck Rebuilders covers the whole south side. See the cost guide, the re-deck and rebuild page, or nearby areas: Center Grove, Franklin, Whiteland.
